How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2008 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk

1 Introduction

This article describes how to setup all editions of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk. Microsoft provides a range of Microsoft SQL Server 2008 editions. Within that range, Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express is free to download and use. The Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express family consisting of three editions:

  • SQL Server 2008 Express
  • SQL Server 2008 Express with Tools
  • SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services

Any edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, including the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express family, is suitable for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk. If the Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express family is chosen then it is recommended that the SQL Server 2008 Express with Advanced Services Edition is chosen, within that family. 2 How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2008

Microsoft SQL Server 2008 includes comprehensive documentation on how to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Follow the setup documentation to install Microsoft SQL Server 2008. There are two aspects of the setup that require special attention when setting up Microsoft SQL Server 2008 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk:

  • Choosing the Instance Name
  • Choosing the Authentication Mode

2.1 Choosing the Instance Name

Ferrysoft Help Desk supports the multiple named instances model of Microsoft SQL Server 2008. The instance name offered by SQL Server 2008 Setup depends on which edition is being installed.

  • Named instance SQLExpress (preferred choice for the Express edition)
  • Default instance (preferred choice for all other editions)

The instance name offered by SQL Server 2008 Setup should be used if possible, because the same logic is used in offering the default instance name by Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator.

The instance name is specified on the Instance Configuration page during Setup. The screen image below shows the Named instance SQLExpress selected during the setup of SQL Server 2008 Express.

2.2 Choosing the Authentication Mode

Ferrysoft Help Desk supports both Windows Authentication Mode and Mixed Mode of Microsoft SQL Server 2008. Windows Authentication Mode should be used if possible, because Windows Authentication Mode is more secure than Mixed Mode.

The authentication mode is specified on the Database Engine Configuration page during Setup. The screen image below shows the Windows Authentication Mode selected during the setup of SQL Server 2008.
