How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk

1 Introduction

This article describes how to setup all editions of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk. The article is subdivided into two sections:

  • How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition
  • How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (all editions except the Express Edition)

2 How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition (SQL Server Express) is the free edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2005. It is available for download from the Microsoft web site:

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition

Ferrysoft Help Desk can be used with either the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition or the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services.

Ferrysoft recommends that SQL Server Management Studio Express is also downloaded and installed. Note that SQL Server Management Studio Express is included in the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services download.

It is also recommended that SQL Server 2005 Books Online is downloaded and installed.

SQL Server Express includes comprehensive documentation on how to setup SQL Server Express in the form of SQL Server 2005 Books Online. Follow the setup documentation to install SQL Server Express. There are two aspects of the setup that require special attention when setting up SQL Server Express for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk:

  • Choosing the Instance Name
  • Choosing the Authentication Mode

2.1 Choosing the Instance Name

The Microsoft SQL Server family can support multiple named instances of the database. SQL Server Express behaves differently to previous versions of Microsoft SQL Server with respect to default instance names. SQL Server Express attempts to create an instance name of SQLExpress if this instance name doesn't already exist. If this is the case then the Instance Name page does not appear unless the Hide advanced configuration options check box is cleared on the Registration Information page. If the Instance Name page appears then an instance name other than SQLExpress can be specified. It is recommended that the instance name of SQLExpress is used if possible.

When subsequently using Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator to login or setup the database connection, the Server is specified according to the instance name chosen here. If the default instance has been installed then choosing Connect To: SQL Server Express default will automatically populate the Server name correctly. If a named instance has been installed then the Server is specified in the format computername\instancename. For example, if the computer name is MYSERVER and the instance name is MYINSTANCE then the Server name required in Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator would be MYSERVER\MYINSTANCE.

2.2 Choosing the Authentication Mode

Ferrysoft Help Desk supports both Windows Authentication Mode and Mixed Mode. Windows Authentication Mode is more secure than Mixed Mode and so this should be used if possible. This is specified on the Authentication Mode page during Setup.

3 How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (all editions except the Express Edition)

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (SQL Server) includes comprehensive documentation on how to setup SQL Server in the form of SQL Server 2005 Books Online. Follow the setup documentation to install SQL Server. There are two aspects of the setup that require special attention when setting up SQL Server for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk:

  • Choosing the Instance Name
  • Choosing the Authentication Mode

3.1 Choosing the Instance Name

The Microsoft SQL Server family can support multiple named instances of the database. If an instance name is not specified then Setup installs a default instance. This is the recommended method of installing SQL Server. However, this method will not work if a default instance already exists and, in this case, a named instance needs to be specified instead. If a named instance is required then this is specified on the Instance Name page during Setup.

When subsequently using Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator to login or setup the database connection, the Server is specified according to the instance name chosen here. If the default instance has been installed then choosing Connect To: SQL Server default will automatically populate the Server name correctly. If a named instance has been installed then the Server is specified in the format computername\instancename. For example, if the computer name is MYSERVER and the instance name is MYINSTANCE then the Server name required in Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator would be MYSERVER\MYINSTANCE.

3.2 Choosing the Authentication Mode

Ferrysoft Help Desk supports both Windows Authentication Mode and Mixed Mode. Windows Authentication Mode is more secure than Mixed Mode and so this should be used if possible. This is specified on the Authentication Mode page during Setup.
