How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (including MSDE 2000) for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk

1 Introduction

This article describes how to setup all editions of Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk. The article is subdivided into two sections:

  • How to setup MSDE 2000
  • How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions except MSDE 2000)

2 How to setup MSDE 2000

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) is the free edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2000. It is available for download from the Microsoft web site:

Microsoft SQL Server: MSDE 2000 Release A

The setup documentation (ReadmeMSDE2000A) is also available from the Microsoft web site. Follow the setup documentation to install MSDE 2000. There are two aspects of the setup that require special attention when setting up MSDE 2000 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk:

  • Choosing the Authentication Mode
  • Choosing the Instance Name

2.1 Choosing the Authentication Mode

Ferrysoft Help Desk supports both Windows Authentication Mode and Mixed Mode. Windows Authentication Mode is more secure than Mixed Mode and so this should be used if possible.

Mixed Mode is specified using the SECURITYMODE Setup parameter. The format of the Setup command for Mixed Mode is:

setup SAPWD="AStrongSAPwd" SECURITYMODE=SQL

Windows Authentication Mode is specified by omitting the SECURITYMODE Setup parameter. The format of the Setup command for Windows Authentication Mode is:

setup SAPWD="AStrongSAPwd"

2.2 Choosing the Instance Name

The Microsoft SQL Server family can support multiple named instances of the database. If an instance name is not specified then Setup installs a default instance. This is the recommended method of installing MSDE 2000. However, this method will not work if a default instance already exists and, in this case, a named instance needs to be specified instead. If a named instance is required then this is specified using the INSTANCENAME Setup parameter. The format of the Setup command is:

setup SAPWD="AStrongSAPwd" INSTANCENAME="InstanceName"

When subsequently using Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator to login or setup the database connection, the Server is specified according to the instance name chosen here. If the default instance has been installed then choosing Connect To: SQL Server default will automatically populate the Server name correctly. If a named instance has been installed then the Server is specified in the format computername\instancename. For example, if the computer name is MYSERVER and the instance name is MYINSTANCE then the Server name required in Ferrysoft Help Desk Administrator would be MYSERVER\MYINSTANCE.

3 How to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2000 (all editions except MSDE 2000)

Microsoft SQL Server 2000 includes comprehensive documentation on how to setup Microsoft SQL Server 2000 in the form of SQL Server Books Online. Follow the setup documentation to install Microsoft SQL Server 2000. There are two aspects of the setup that require special attention when setting up Microsoft SQL Server 2000 for use with Ferrysoft Help Desk:

  • Choosing the Instance Name
  • Choosing the Authentication Mode

3.1 Choosing the Instance Name

The Microsoft SQL Server family can support multiple named instances of the database. If an instance name is not specified then Setup installs a default instance. This is the recommended method of installing Microsoft SQL Server 2000. However, this method will not work if a default instance already exists and, in this case, a named instance needs to be specified instead. If a named instance is required then this is specified on the Instance Name page during Setup.

3.2 Choosing the Authentication Mode

Ferrysoft Help Desk supports both Windows Authentication Mode and Mixed Mode. Windows Authentication Mode is more secure than Mixed Mode and so this should be used if possible. This is specified on the Authentication Mode page during Setup.
